On December 6 1989, tragedy struck in a classroom at l’École Polytechnique. A man named Marc Lépine walked in with a semi-automatic weapon and after separating the men from the women, he opened fire and murdered 14 young women who were studying mechanical engineering. He injured another 13 before turning the gun on himself. He blamed feminist women for ruining his life. The shooting, also referred to as “The Montreal Massacre” shocked many and sent the province into a debate about stricter gun laws and deep rooted anti-feminist sentiment.
30 years later, on this day we honour the 14 women tragically killed. Let us never forget their sacrifice.
Join us on December 6th at the LB Atrium for a memorial. We will be handing out white ribbons everyday during lunch on the week leading up to the memorial.
